Spoiled Dog "Growlers"

Spoiled Dog Winery is one of our premier local Whidbey Island Wineries. Just a short distance from the highway, off Maxwelton Road, you'll find a driveway with an inviting sign that suggests at least one spoiled dog resides there. The driveway winds up and around through a canopy of trees until they suddenly fall away to an opening and vistas of a lovely farm setting with the new rustic-style winery and tasting room. As you approach and arrive, you'll wonder if it could be any more idyllic.

The small tasting room is cozy and warm, appointed with a few bistro tables and a tasting counter that spans the width of the room, behind it are several oak kegs and larger stainless-steel vats in the back. Oh, and adorning the room are perhaps a spoiled dog or two lounging on the floor.

I just love this winery for its superb wines, atmosphere, and accommodating, friendly and knowledgeable hosts. The award-winning wines are complex and delicious, with the coveted pinot noir grapes grown on site in the Vineyard for the Estate Pinot Noir. Whether grown at the Vineyard or sourced from other vineyards that grow grapes specifically for Spoiled Dog, all are certified Biodynamic grapes - an ultra-organic way of farming.

There is one very notable idea unique to Spoiled Dog Winery that I would like to showcase in this Edition - It's the Growler! These refillable growlers are 34oz (1 liter), one-third more wine than regular wine bottles, which are 750 ml.

"I have always had this idea that our growlers are nothing new - quite the contrary. They are based on the tradition in Europe for local residents to go down to their local wineries and fill containers with wine. Done for 100's of years - tradition! So, not only are the growler fills economical and very green (no recycling and wasting bottles, corks and labels), they support the community." (Karen Krug)

The Growler rewards program offers a stamp card with a paw stamp for every fill. Pay for 9 fills and get the 10th one free! The average cost of this premium handcrafted wine at the tenth fill becomes much less than your average 750 ml bottle - an outstanding value! Choose from Pooch White (Chardonnay), or Pooch Red (Columbia Valley Syrah-Cabernet Blend) - both are delightful!

Wine on Tap “Growlers”

During the Summer, Spoiled Dog Winery is open Wed-Sun so it doesn't have a "Growler Hour" dedicated to the fill, most non-peak months open on Wednesdays from 3-4pm for "Growler Hour". However, any time is "Growler" time at Spoiled Dog. They will even open by appointment, so you can fill up when needed mid-week. There are some who fill up a six-pack each time! Spoiled Dog Growlers make a wonderful gift!
