It was the Best of Thyme by Rambling Rose

Happy Solstice everyone!

I was ready to be a cheerleader and start in about renewing our veggie gardens but mine is very sad… too much rain and not enough warm sun. Well the potatoes and onions are fine, sigh. Maybe later.

To keep my hands in the dirt and my garden brain busy, I have added a new flower bed to my back yard. It is a crescent shape about 12 feet long and 4 feet wide at the center. So many of us have flat yards and I want to add some height without hauling in lots of soil. Though I did bring in top soil enough to raise the center 2 feet and have it tapered to about 2 inches above the grass area. I dug up the sparse grass and turned over the dirt there, then added garden dirt with mushroom compost mixed in.

To create the sense of height I planted a small Lingonberry at the top with Archer's Gold Thyme (approximately 8 inches tall) on each side. As the "hump" slopes down I added Mother of Thyme, White Thymes, Creeping Red and Caraway Thymes (those get shorter as they head down the slope). At the bottom I have Blue Star Creeper, and New Zealand Brass Buttons. What I have visualized is the colors and textures becoming a solid mass and adding interest as the eye follows the progression upward. I love Thymes and ground covers to give a "Monet" affect. Muted pastels blending with one another. I hope to have a photo in about a month showing the success.

Let's hope it warms up and my veggies take off.

Until next thyme.
